Homepage of BasscoverPete https://basscoverpete.com/ I’ve uploaded several songs of Steely Dan and what I like about Reelin’ in the years is that it has got a really steady shuffle bassgroove! The notes in the maingroove (for instance ar 1-4) has got the same notes as a lot of bluesgrooves (root-octave-sixt-fifth). The ‘secret’ of this groove are the staccato notes played on every first eight note of a beat. And how wonderful ‘easy’ the groove is in the Chorus: just rootnotes and octaves. The challenge with the maingrooves is in playing it disciplined and steady in the rhythm. Also the position of the left hand in the maingroove as played in bar 1-4 is important. The ‘secret’ here is to not move your left hand too much. Play the groove on the G chord in the second position and the groove of the A-chord in the fourth position. In this way you will be able to play the fast triplets! And ofcourse the bassline of the Verse is really fun to play! It’s a syncopated line (it starts before the first and third beat). In bar 91-96 Walter is really on his best with the high notes during the solo. This is really really fun to play! I’ve also uploaded a Bass & Drums only version of this song on my channel.
