Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK: Founder and first leader of the Republican People's Party of Turkey; first president of the Turkish Republic, founder of the modern Turkish state. Atatürk's large-scale reforms led to the gradual transformation of Turkey into a secular state, including the introduction of the Latin alphabet, granting women equal rights with men, and the adoption of a new civil code. The president himself was an atheist, but Islam was not persecuted during his reign or after. From 1923 to 1925, Atatürk was married to Latife Uşaklıgil, whom he met in Smyrna. Latife also belonged to a wealthy family and was educated in London and Paris. The couple had no children of their own, but adopted seven (some sources say eight) daughters and a son, and also took care of two orphaned boys. His daughter, Sabiha Gökçen, later became the first Turkish female pilot and military aviator, and his son, Mustafa Demir, became a professional politician. His daughter, Afet Inan, is Turkey's first female historian. Schools, a dam on the Euphrates River, and Turkey's main airport in Istanbul are named after Atatürk. There are Atatürk museums in Trabzon, Gazipasa, Adana, Alanya, and Izmir. Monuments to Turkey's first president have been erected in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Venezuela, Japan, and Israel. His portrait appears on the Turkish banknote.
