Home comforts: How do Gen Z’s living standards compare to previous cohorts?

Whether the issue is wealth, work, rising student debt or dwindling chances of home ownership, it’s been well documented that Millennials have faced a more challenging living standards path than many of those who came before them. But what about the generation who came after them? With new data showing what is happening to millennials as they approach middle age, and the early careers of Gen Z, we are beginning to understand whether generation-on-generation living standards progress is back in 21st century Britain. How do the incomes of Gen-Z compare to previous cohorts? Is the changing structure of households impacting their living standards, and how we measure their disposable incomes? How is Gen-Z’s housing situation affecting other aspects of life? And how could policymakers address this deep social shift? The Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of the key highlights new analysis focussing on the living standards of young adults born from the second half of the 1990s onwards, we will hear from leading experts on a mix of encouraging evidence and worrying signs on living standards, all in the context of the rise of the stay-at-homers. The event will be open for people to physically attend, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.
