Braving the Tides for Goose Barnacles on Spain’s Rocky Coast
The González sisters—Susanna, Isabel, Lala and Belén—ply their collective trade as percebeiras, or goose barnacle hunters, in Baiona, Spain. While the barnacles, or “percebes” as they're called in Spanish, are plentiful along the rocky Atlantic coast of Galicia, harvesting these little culinary delicacies is often a difficult—and even dangerous—job. Treacherous footing, rogue waves and bone-chillingly cold waters are but a few of the hazards that percebeiros must contend with on a daily basis. For these reasons, percebes command high prices on the seafood market. Traditionally, barnacle hunting was a male-dominated profession, but together, the González sisters are carrying on a family legacy of living off the sea.
