He is my teacher, and under his guidance, I learned theatre, diction, and direction. The themes of Identity and Self compelled me to reflect deeply on his artistic journey—his personal identity as well as the self he has constructed through decades of devotion to language, performance, and Shakespeare. In Pakistan, he remains the only dramatist and broadcaster to have attempted five of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies in Urdu: Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear, and Romeo and Juliet. These productions were staged at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), where Shakespeare was not merely translated, but culturally reimagined while preserving the emotional and linguistic depth of the originals. Now turning 92, Mr. Mohyeddin continues to direct and adapt Shakespearean drama in the Urdu language. His command over Shakespeare’s language, rhythm, and diction—retained with astonishing clarity—is both beautiful and deeply inspiring. His performances and adaptations reveal not only technical mastery but a profound understanding of human psychology, tragedy, and moral conflict. Since 2005, he has served as the Dean of the National Academy of Performing Arts, where his leadership has consistently created space for young artists to emerge, perform, and speak with honesty and courage. When entrusted with authority, age becomes irrelevant—his creative energy remains undiminished. Even today, he directs at least one play every quarter with the young and talented students of NAPA, adapting Shakespeare into Urdu and conducting lectures on diction and theatre arts. Through his work, Shakespeare finds a living voice in our language, and generations of artists find their own identity through his mentorship. #urdupoetry #legend #ustad #guru #theater #williamshakespeare #romeoandjuliet
