Week 186 - Alagaddūpama Sutta (Part 1): “The Simile of ‘Handling the Venomous Water-Snake’” (MN 22). (Recorded on May 30th, 2026). PDF link to a free digital copy of the Sutta can be obtained from the website: https://www.mindreleased.com/pali-suttas Today's sutta exploration session was devoted to the first part of the Alagaddūpama Sutta (The Simile of ‘Handling the Venomous Water-Snake'), where Lord Buddha uses the powerful simile of a venomous water-snake to describe the danger in 'holding' the Dhamma from the 'wrong side,' just like holding the venomous snake from the head what would surely lead to one's suffering and even death, as they snake would turn and bite one. In the same way, misrepresenting and polluting The Dhamma leads to much suffering for the person, who harms both him/herself and others, as we see in the example of the Bhikkhu Ariṭṭha, described in the sutta, who goes on spreading false and wrong views as if they were Dhamma. More specifically, this misguided monk claims that the obstructions to the Holy life, such as sensuality and sexuality in particular, which Lord Buddha has defined as such in no uncertain terms, in fact have no impact on the person who commits them, and therefore, can co-exist with the Holy Life. This evil and wrong view is what Lord Buddha chastises the Bhikkhu for and then offers a powerful simile to teach all of us on what it means to 'hold' the Dhamma in the wrong way, that sensuality and the Holy Life are two different paths which can never cross. Here, Bhante Candana highlighted the fact that Lord Buddha was speaking to monks and to monastic life, where sexuality has no place, whereas it is of course different for lay people. A key message however is that sensual desires can never lead to fulfillment or satisfaction, as they will always leave the person empty handed, and wanting for more. Please NOTE: Bhikkhu Candana survives through the generosity of individuals and the occasional donations he receives to obtain his food, shelter, transportation, and medicine from supporters across the globe, as he continues his relentless work of preserving the Dispensation (Sāsana), by translating the Suttas and sharing The Dhamma, as taught by The Buddha.
