Week 188 - Alagaddūpama Sutta (Part Three) “The Simile of Handling the Venomous Water-Snake” MN 22

Week 188 - Alagaddūpama Sutta (Part Three): “The Simile of ‘Handling the Venomous Water-Snake’” (MN 22). (Recorded on June 13th, 2026). PDF link to a free digital copy of the Sutta can be obtained from the website: https://www.mindreleased.com/pali-suttas Today's sutta exploration session was "Part 3" of the Alagaddūpama Sutta, focused on how to properly treat and respect the Dhamma, since 'mishandling' it through wrong views like the Bhikkhu Ariṭṭha was doing in the sutta, leads to much suffering and pain, just like in the case of a venomous water-snake, Lord Buddha says, when held through its nail or body, as it would surely turn back and bite you. While exploring the latter sections of this powerful sutta, today's discussion included unpacking a series of metaphors and similes that Lord Buddha uses to convey the fact that nothing in existence is stable, substantial, reliable, or lasting, and therefore the deeply ingrained wrong view of selfhood or the soul, is utterly baseless and a cause for much suffering. Here, Bhante Candana emphasized the fact that anicca or impermanence itself is not the problem, but it is the underlying view of selfhood which leads to suffering (dukkha) as one experiences the instability or loss of all things that the six senses bring to us, yet grabs onto them as if one's property. Yet again, Lord Buddha breaks down forms, sounds, tastes, smells, touches, and ideas as neither belonging to nor being us, and hence letting go of our identification is the end of suffering, for there is no 'self' to be annihilated or destroyed in the first place, as the Buddha would be wrongly accused of teaching many times. Please NOTE: Bhikkhu Candana survives through the generosity of individuals and the occasional donations he receives to obtain his food, shelter, transportation, and medicine from supporters across the globe, as he continues his relentless work of preserving the Dispensation (Sāsana), by translating the Suttas and sharing The Dhamma, as taught by The Buddha.
