Life with the Storms Part 1 - The Flood of Storm Desmond

10 years ago, on December 5th 2015, we were flooded out by Storm Desmond and had to live in temporary accommodation for 1.5 years while our house was repaired. This was our first experience being flooded out, and it was a traumatic event. In September 2025, I was invited by BlueJam Arts to take part in a performance about Climate Change called Jam For Climate. I got the inspiration to share our experience of how we've been affected by several storms, and show how they are gradually getting stronger due to the impacts of climate change. I couldn't say no to having the chance to share my experience and have my say on the climate crisis, so I took the opportunity to make it possible to share it with you all too by making a Youtube video. For lack of a better word, with it being such a traumatic event, I also wanted to help raise awareness of the emotional effect of being flooded. We get storms now which don't affect us, but when the wind gets really loud and the river gets high it can put us in fight/flight mode and take it out of us the next day. I have also made other YouTube videos going over how it affects us now, and how our flood defences have been improved since the storm which are linked below. We are aware Storm Desmond is now part of the syllabus/curriculum for A-Level Geography students, and have had some students ask us to share our experience with them for their course.
