KBS previously reported on the fact that there were vote counting errors in the elections for the Superintendents of Education in Jeonbuk and Gyeonggi Province during the recent local elections. However, KBS analyzed data from four local elections held over the past 16 years since 2010 and discovered signs of vote counting errors in seven additional towns, townships, and neighborhoods. Differences in vote counts exceeding 100 votes were confirmed in towns, townships, and neighborhoods across four cities and provinces nationwide, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Daegu. This is an exclusive report by reporter Seo Yoon-deok. [Report] On election day, voters receive ballots for both the head of a local government and the superintendent of education at the polling station and place them in a single ballot box. If the voting had been done correctly, the vote counts should be equal. However, in Junghwasan 1-dong, Jeonju, the vote count for the Jeonbuk Superintendent of Education was about 110 fewer than that for the Jeonbuk Governor, and in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, the vote count for the Gyeonggi Superintendent of Education was about 420 fewer than that for the Governor. [National Election Commission Official/Voice altered: "About one person might have carried the ballot in their arms. Since there is less interest in the Superintendent of Education, even so, the difference in vote counts is slightly higher than usual."] An analysis by KBS of local elections over the past 16 years, starting from 2010, confirmed that there were quite a few places with such large differences in vote counts. In the 2022 local elections, in Gaebong 2-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul, the number of votes for the Superintendent of Education was about 500 fewer than that for the Head of the local government on election day, and in Hyomok 2-dong, Daegu in 2018, there was a difference of 179 votes between the Mayor and the Superintendent of Education. A vote difference of over 100 in a single Eup, Myeon, or Dong raises suspicions of potential vote counting errors. It was confirmed that a total of seven Eup, Myeon, or Dong locations experienced a vote difference of over 100 in local elections over the past 16 years. There were also cases where the results of neighboring Eup, Myeon, or Dong appeared to have been reversed. On the day of the 2014 local elections, there was a difference of 520 votes each between the heads of local governments and the superintendents of education in Gajwa 3-dong and 4-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon, and it is presumed that there were errors in the vote counting process.
