Shenzhen Metro: Above Ground, Below Ground, From Money Hub to Home | 25 Nov 2025
25 November 2025, Shenzhen. Immersive metro ride. Route: Shenzhen North Station – Convention & Exhibition Center – OCT-LOFT Creative Culture Park. Casual footage by the filmmaker of Masters in the Forbidden City and Every Treasure Tells a Story. ——— The elevated section between Baishilong and Shangmeilin—the handshake buildings outside the window—is the key to understanding Shenzhen. The second phase of Shenzhen Metro Line 4 extends from the Children‘s Palace to Qinghu. Stations from Baishilong to Qinghu are all elevated. When the train emerges from underground onto the viaduct, the scene shifts abruptly—dense rows of handshake buildings, laundry hanging from balconies, street-level shop signs, tangled antennas. This is not chaos. These are the fossil specimens of urbanization, carrying the first-stop memories of countless migrants. The cornerstone of affordable urban life, the toughest strand of the city‘s social fabric. ——… Inside and outside the checkpoint—two worlds divided by a wire fence. In 1982, a 84.6‑kilometer “Special Zone Management Line” split Shenzhen in two. Inside the checkpoint (Futian, Luohu, Nanshan, Yantian) covered less than one‑sixth of the city’s area. The gap in infrastructure was vast—there was a saying: “Inside the checkpoint is Europe, outside is Africa”. In 2010, the Special Economic Zone expanded to the entire city. In 2018, the wire fence began to be dismantled. The physical line is gone, but the psychological line remains in many Shenzheners‘ memories. An invisible wall that once split this city. ——— Shenzhen’s relentless rush comes from its compressed history. It has traveled in forty years what took others a century. But emotional identity requires time and shared memory. Many say Shenzhen feels like a money‑making jungle, a transit hub—and they expect more. The city‘s pain point: how does it transform from a “money hub” into a “home” that people emotionally identify with? What Shenzhen urgently needs is not grand narratives of GDP, but the ability to “archaeologize the present”—to gaze at, document, and interpret its seemingly rough everyday landscapes (the handshake buildings) and shared psychological states (the subway commute). Shenzhen’s“depth” isn‘t in thousand‑year‑old relics. It is being generated right now. It’s on millions of commuters‘ journeys. It’s in the cracks between handshake buildings. It‘s in the late‑night lights of the tech parks. It’s in the “liquid solitude” and “identity ferrying” of countless “yous” in the subway cars. From Shenzhen North Station to the Convention & Exhibition Center, then to OCT‑LOFT—from mega‑hub to CBD heart to a creative park in renovated factories. This route is like a road movie through Shenzhen‘s history and present. ——— Where do we begin to understand a city? With its above and below ground—the moment Line 4 emerges onto the viaduct, the flash of handshake buildings outside the window. With its inside and outside the checkpoint—the now‑removed wire fence that still lingers in memory, the gap between “Europe” and “Africa.” With its “archaeology of the present”—gazing at rough everyday landscapes, building private archives of the city‘s fleeting states from within the subway car.
