Q&A with Eva Mary | Grief Writing | Why writing has always been there for me

In this Q&A, Eva Mary traces her relationship with writing back to childhood: how journalling and books helped her make sense of herself and the world from a very early age, and how that thread has never left her. After studying English literature at university, she found her way to Survivors Poetry Scotland, where she trained as a co-facilitator running therapeutic and expressive writing workshops in mental health settings. For years she went on to facilitate writing workshops independently, in mental health organisations and other health settings. Writing, she says, always felt natural and right. This video gives a real sense of where her practice comes from, and why the written word sits so centrally in the grief work she now offers. Transcript: And from as long as I can remember, journaling, writing, and engaging with books helped me to cope with life... to understand myself and the world better, and helped me to navigate everything from a very early age. And then at university I studied English literature and also ran the English Literature Society. And again, engaging with literature helped me, and I felt I found my place in the world often through books, through writing. And then after university, I got involved with an organisation called Survivors Poetry Scotland, which sadly doesn't exist anymore- ... where I started being trained to be a co-facilitator running- Therapeutic and expressive writing workshops in mental health settings. And I learned so much from my mentors there, and then I went on to facilitate writing workshops in mental health organisations independently. And for years I ran writing workshops for people with mental health problems and in other health settings, and that was just, felt so natural and right. And in the meantime, I was in supportive reflective writing groups myself. So writing's, always been there for me.
