New England Glory Volume 1 | Mountain Division

The glory of New England railroading was never better than on Maine Central's Mountain Division in the white mountains of New Hampshire. Photographer Stan Whitney takes you back to 1946 and 1950 to relive the beauty and majesty of steam railroading in the vicinity of Crawford Notch, not far from Mt. Washington. Leaving Boston, we trace the B&M - MEC seasonal train "The Mountaineer" en route to Intervale, where a Main Central crew assumes the run up "The Notch". You'll enjoy the view off the rear platform as the E-7 tackles the grade. Then, spend a day on the Mountain Division and observe every movement from dawn to dusk with doubleheaded road and pusher locomotives, mixed trains, local freights, and the daily passenger run from portland. With beautiful scenery, this all steam operation was all you could hope for in New England. Also included are shots of the roundhouse at Bartlett, servicing operations, and many detail shots pf structures. Photographer Stanley Whitney spared no effort to capture the full glory of this operation and he deserves special credit for this great work. The film, now owned by James T. Ickes, was provided through the cooperation of the Boston & Maine Historical Society, Inc. with arrangements by Carl F. Byron. Description taken from cassette box.
