Pokémon Champions - Introducing the Overqwil Team! - Jul 8 26 A
With a new regulation and a new season, here is another double battle team, this one with Overqwil as the headliner! (I will not use the Minimize strategy on this Overqwil—I chose it because it was my favorite of the Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.) This one might be a tad weirder than the Aurorus Team, though in part it’s bcause fewer Pokémon were added to Regulation M-B than I expected, which heavily featured more Mega Evolutions. Definitely though, you’ll see both of the Mega Evolution Pokémon were introduced in Regulation M-B. As this is the first video with this team, here are what their nicknames stand for: OVERQWIL - Poindexter - from “point” MR. RIME - Kane - from “cane,” as he wields a cane made of ice SCEPTILE - Vincenzo - named after Vinnie from Littlest Pet Shop (2012) CLEFABLE - Mabel - rhymes with “Clefable” TAUROS (KANTONIAN) - Ferdinand - named after the storybook character Ferdinand the Bull LYCANROC (MIDDAY) - Bjorn - name is Swedish for “wolf” This time, the nicknames are pretty simple and easy to explain. Nothing too complicated about them. I expect to make many revisions to this team down the line though. 00:00 - Battle #1 Type: Double Battle Opponent: TunAZ Battle Court: Battle Arena Music: Team MZ My Pokémon: Bjorn (Lycanroc) (Midday), Vincenzo (Sceptile), Poindexter (Overqwil), Ferdinand (Tauros) (Kantonian) Opponent’s Pokémon: Incineroar, Whimsicott, Pelipper, Swampert This battle was originally about 12 minutes in length, one of the longest battles I’ve played in Pokémon Champions up to now (not including the one where the game seemed to glitch out, didn’t allow me to make a move, and forced me to run out the clock). The length of this battle also probably had to do with Incineroar being an all-in support Pokémon based on lowering the opponent’s Attack and Sp. Attack (and with Will-O-Wisp too), with Whimsicott using Light Screen and Encore to buy more time. 07:05 - Battle #2 Type: Double Battle Opponent: 阿倫 (Ālún) Battle Court: Battle Arena Music: Trainer (Heart Gold & Soul Silver) My Pokémon: Bjorn (Lycanroc) (Midday), Vincenzo (Sceptile), Poindexter (Overqwil), Kane (Mr. Rime) Opponent’s Pokémon: Talonflame, Tsareena, Blastois, Basculegion (Male) This battle shows my climb out of the Poké Ball Rank—though did you have any doubt in your mind? Having seen what people commonly use, this team was made with that in mind, and Basculegion using Last Respects was one of them. I have never seen Talonflame use Rain Dance before…that was new to me. I’ve seen them use Sunny Day though. (And yet another example of why I avoid Triple Axel unless there’s no other physical Ice move available on that Pokémon, though in Tsareena’s case, I think that really is the only one she can learn.) 11:01 - Battle #3 Type: Double Battle Opponent: ぐんそう (Gunsou) Battle Court: Gym Court Music: Trainer (Red, Blue, Green, & Yellow) My Pokémon: Bjorn (Lycanroc) (Midday), Mabel (Clefable), Vincenzo (Sceptile), Poindexter (Overqwil) Opponent’s Pokémon: Scrafty, Malamar, ?, ? Looks like this team is based on an opening volley of Intimidate, and lots and lots of it: Scrafty can use Intimidate twice without switching out, once by entering play and again by Mega Evolving. Looks like the objective is to use Skill Swap over and over to continue triggering Intimidate. This might backfire against Pokémon with Contrary, Defiant, or Competitive though. My team had none of those Abilities, but it did have something with a strong Fairy-type damage. 12:51 - Battle #4 Type: Double Battle Opponent: Raist Battle Court: Gym Court Music: Ivor My Pokémon: Bjorn (Lycanroc) (Midday), Ferdinand (Tauros) (Kantonian), Kane (Mr. Rime), Mabel (Clefable) Opponent’s Pokémon: Torkoal, Vileplume, ?, ? An interesting gimmick: Torkoal’s Drought triggers harsh sunlight, which doubles Vileplume’s Speed thanks to Chlorophyll. Vileplume can now use After You, which boosts Torkoal’s Speed to Vileplume’s and, provided nothing outruns it, will blast a full strength Eruption under harsh sunlight. Thanks to this opener, at least in part, my opponent had accrued a 9-win streak, the highest I’ve seen playing this game on an opponent. (I have only accomplished an 8-win streak.) That being said, even a consistent winner like my opponent can make slip-ups: After You can also target an opposing Pokémon, which is…one way this strategy can fail. I’d probably make an error like that too. 14:09 - Battle #5 Type: Double Battle Opponent: noi Battle Court: Gym Court Music: Trainer (Black & White) My Pokémon: Bjorn (Lycanroc) (Midday), Kane (Mr. Rime), Mabel (Clefable), Poindexter (Overqwil) Opponent’s Pokémon: Noivern, Alcremie, Gardevoir, Clefable What a lot of Fairy-types on the opposing team! And they picked all three of them. Also, they had Noivern use Air Slash on Bjorn (Lycanroc) when they had Dragon Pulse this whole time?
