On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that knocked out power at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant — and TEPCO had ignored a 2008 internal warning that this was possible. As three reactors melted down, a skeleton crew of workers known as the Fukushima Fifty stayed behind, operating in 400 millisieverts per hour of radiation with car batteries and fire hoses. Those men would later be treated like outcasts by their own country. This is their story.
