I'm sure you all know many terms that are only understood within your own community. At Nada High School, we used to call the smell of pork bone soup that clings to your pubic area after visiting a ramen shop called Shekarashika "Shekahige." Why do these terms exist? One reason is that they're convenient because they're shorter than trying to explain things using more general vocabulary, but I think the main reason is because they're enjoyable. The process of using and communicating terms that are only understood within a specific community gives people a strong sense of belonging and a sense of security. In other words, terminology is partly intended to be used for the enjoyment of inside jokes. In fact, in professions generally considered to be high-stress, such as nursing, education, and emergency services, the frequent use of inside jokes, such as silly nicknames and secret gestures, tends to strengthen identity and increase a sense of belonging. These terms, created to succinctly and accurately communicate one's intentions when working diligently, are useful for enhancing each employee's sense of belonging, teaching them the essentials of job performance, creating a sense of competence and earning trust, and even slipping them into conversations at drinking parties to elicit a few laughs. But is it really okay for Kasumigaseki to continue being a workplace with such an excessive amount of terminology? Perhaps this is the starting point for lowering the barriers to employment from the private sector and helping citizens perceive the government as transparent and trustworthy. I hope this video will provide an opportunity for Kasumigaseki and each and every citizen to reconsider something.
