Atuweni Juwayeyi-Agbermodji, the AML-CFT advisor at UNODC East Africa bureau
In collaboration with the Kenya Judiciary Academy and other sponsors, we jointly brought together judicial officers from 21 African countries to dialogue on and deliberate on the experiences, the challenges and emerging issues in adjudicating organised crimes and cases involving illicit financial flows. The judiciary plays a critical role in disrupting organised crimes. And given the transnational nature of organised crime, regional and international cooperation amongst law enforcement agencies and judicial institutions is essential. One of the key invited guests at this meeting was Ms Atuweni Juwayeyi-Agbermodji, the AML-CFT advisor at the UNODC East Africa bureau. 'Just as criminals do not have borders, the judiciary should also not know borders,' she said, in appreciation of bringing judges together from across the continent to dialogue about common issues and to find common ground on common challenges. She also stressed the importance of taking a similar stand within a country, bringing judges and magistrates together within a jurisdiction to dialogue on issue affecting adjudication of organised crimes, and tackling the issue with a common approach.
