The Power of Guardian Angels | Lessons from St. Lidwina of Schiedam

On this Feast of the Guardian Angels, we reflect deeply on the profound ways angels guide, protect, and love us. Drawing from the extraordinary life of St. Lidwina of Schiedam, a 15th-century saint who endured immense suffering yet experienced constant angelic presence, this sermon invites us to recognize and cherish our own guardian angels. St. Lidwina, bedridden for 38 years, was visited frequently by her guardian angel, who consoled her, corrected her faults, and even carried her to places like the Garden of Eden, purgatory, and holy shrines across Europe. Despite her suffering, she radiated hope and love, showing the Church’s endurance in times of trial. Through her story, we learn: Guardian Angels bring us comfort in times of despair. They help us grow in holiness, correcting us when we falter. Their very presence brings joy, healing, and strength. We too can call upon our guardian angels for protection, guidance, and love. This reflection ends with St. Lidwina’s beautiful Prayer to the Guardian Angel, reminding us that these heavenly companions willingly serve us with deep love, leading us toward eternal life.
