For Freud, human beings are not only driven by the desire to live, to love, and to build. They also carry within them a powerful tendency toward aggression, linked to the death drive. Civilization must therefore protect them from themselves. But to achieve this, it turns this aggression inward: this is the birth of the superego, the moral conscience, and the feeling of guilt. The price of civilization then becomes terrible: more security, more order, more collective life… but also less happiness.
