남아공, "외국인 떠나라" 불길 확산... 외국인 대상 폭력 사태까지

【Anchor】 Anti-immigration rallies and protests have been continuing in South Africa for the past four months. In some areas, looting and violence targeting foreigners have even occurred. Amidst this, tension is rising in South African society as yesterday was the deadline set by protesters for undocumented immigrants to leave South Africa. World Reporter Kim Jun-woo reports. 【Reporter】 Protesters holding wooden sticks march through the city center, chanting anti-immigration slogans. Anti-immigration protests took place in major South African cities to mark the Day of Expulsion and Deportation of Undocumented Immigrants. The Day of Expulsion and Deportation is the deadline notified by the organizers of the anti-immigration protests to undocumented immigrants to leave South Africa by June 30. [Jacinta Jinhle Ngobese-Juma / Organizer of Anti-Immigration Protest: We demand that national resources be mobilized over the next six months to deport illegal immigrants from this country.] In some areas, foreign residents' homes and shops were attacked by protesters, and clashes with police attempting to stop the attacks resulted in at least four deaths. Feeling threatened, foreigners also evacuated one after another to their home countries or neighboring nations. 269 Nigerians also returned to their home country on chartered flights provided by their government. [Emmanuela Kagusu / Nigerian: I have lived in South Africa since 2017, and it was too dangerous. Murders were happening constantly, and threats were endless.] Anti-immigrant protests in South Africa began last March. They stemmed from claims that high unemployment rates, deteriorating public services, and rising crime were caused by undocumented immigrants. The protests are spreading, particularly as the perception grows that undocumented immigrants are taking jobs away from South African citizens by working for low wages. [Sapo Mahili / Representative of Western Cape Labor and Civil Society Group: Foreigners are being hired for cheap labor, but the biggest beneficiaries are the politicians.] However, experts point out that there is insufficient evidence to support the protesters' claims. There are approximately 3 million immigrants in South Africa, which is only about 4% of the total population. Analysts suggest that the rising unemployment rate due to economic hardship and the deterioration of public services, such as healthcare and education, are more caused by a lack of investment and corruption. Furthermore, criticism is being raised that politicians are trying to stir up anti-immigrant sentiment to garner votes ahead of the local elections coming up in November. However, the organizers of the anti-immigrant protests warned that if the government does not resolve the issue of illegal immigrants, they will push for direct deportation along with a nationwide shutdown. In response, the South African government strengthened nationwide security, stating that while they understand the public's concerns, foreigners should not be made scapegoats.
