How Reputation Judging Ruined Gymnastics at 1989 Worlds

#gymnast #gymnastics #womensgymnastics Today we take a much-needed re-watch of the final women's event from the 1989 World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart--the Floor Exercise Final. Freshly-crowned all-around champion Svetlana Boginskaya from the Soviet Union was the favorite as she had scored 10s for both her prior Optional routines. Other contenders were Romanians Cristina Bontas (who had also scored a 10) and Daniela Silivaș, the reigning World and Olympic FX Champion. Soviet #2 Olesya Dudnik was coming off recently winning the Vault Final, and her dazzling Gershwin routine could also prove a spoiler. However, in the world according to Monica Phelps (and let's face it.. it is Monica's World and we are all just living in it), Chinese Powerhouse Yang Bo was the one with the best chance to possibly overcome Boginskaya. Monica Phelps is truly one of a kind and I've chosen to mostly let her words tell the story of this Floor Final, for better or worse! I hope you enjoy! ETA: I must clarify that I love Yang Bo.
