This was a Hot Mess for so many reasons--ones that go beyond the gymnastics on display. (Although there was certainly a lot of mess there as well.) The first year of a new Code of Points can often prove challenging, and in 1989 it was most evident on vault. There were new rules requiring the gymnasts to perform two different vaults from two different families for the first time. And boy, did this cause havoc!
