Anti-Asian Racism and Gender-Based Violence: Historical and Contemporary Realities

Presented by: Avvy Go, Clinical Director, Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic; Kelly Go, Outreach Coordinator, SWAN Vancouver; and Dr. Jiyoung Lee-An, Instructor, Carleton University Participants will: Be able to identify the problems of the Asian model minority myth and understand how it hides the sexualized and gendered racism that women of Asian descent have faced in Canada. Learn more about the longstanding and complex history and present day racism against Asian Canadians. Learn about the continuation of racist ideology that negatively impacts Asian communities, and on top of anti-Asian racism, anti sex work and anti-migrant sentiment also need to be acknowledged.
