I specialize in elderly care, providing home visits, online consultations for seniors, families, and caregivers, and providing in-home care for seniors through professional caregivers. I specialize in Geriatric Neuropsychiatry from Unifesp. I have a PhD in Health Sciences from USP. In this video, we'll discuss Alzheimer's, the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in older adults, and how to identify the stages of Alzheimer's. This disease is characterized by a progressive and incurable degenerative disorder that manifests as the deterioration of cognitive function—the ability to recognize objects and people, and motor coordination. This gradually leads to impairment in daily activities such as bathing, hygiene, eating, work, and paying bills. Alzheimer's symptoms vary, including neuropsychiatric symptoms and behavioral changes such as agitation, anxiety, delusions, hallucinations, persevering speech (repeating the same sentence repeatedly), irritability, and others. What causes Alzheimer's? The causes are unknown, and it is believed that Alzheimer's is hereditary. Genetics plays a significant role in developing the disease. If someone in my immediate family has developed the disease, I may develop it myself. The disease can be divided into four stages: initial, moderate, severe, and terminal. Some risk factors for Alzheimer's disease include age, which is more common in individuals over 60 with a family history and low levels of education. The more the brain is stimulated, the more neural connections are created. It is extremely important that our brains are constantly stimulated throughout life, because even if the disease can manifest itself, it will take longer for symptoms to appear. How is Alzheimer's disease diagnosed? Laboratory tests can thoroughly investigate the possible causes of memory loss. Once diagnosed, treatment for Alzheimer's disease is irreversible. Treatment aims to improve the individual's quality of life and shorten the progression of the disease. Treatment is divided into two phases: drug treatment and non-drug treatment. Alzheimer's medications are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors that minimize the development of the disease. Regarding non-pharmacological treatments, they aim for cognitive rehabilitation and cognitive stimulation, in addition to reminiscence therapy. Channel for Seniors, Caregivers, and Nursing Homes.
