Starting with his first victory at age 24 in 2007, Tomomatsu Nobuhiko has won the Shimano Japan Cup Iso (Grey) Fishing Championship five times. Renowned as the strongest modern fly fishing angler, this tournament angler continues to work as a salaryman while spending approximately 50 weekends a year practicing at the remote rocky shores of Higashiizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, with the goal of winning the Japan Cup Iso. Among the 24 competitors who advanced through the first round and semi-finals to the national tournament, what does it take to win each match and come out on top? The skills he needs to master, the match sense he needs to anticipate his opponents, and the sixth sense that comes with a serious fight. We followed Tomomatsu on his practice fishing trips to uncover the true character behind his strength. The national tournament will be held on November 25th and 26th, 2023, on Fukue Island in the Goto Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture.
