The Doors-Moonlight Drive (isolated Calvinet and pianos)
This is a rerelease of my original Moonlight Drive video. This version has revised piano parts and much more accurate tones. Moonlight Drive was recorded in August of 1967. The song was one of the earliest song Jim Morrison wrote. Jim famously sung this song for Ray Manzarek on Venice Beach in 1965, this meeting marked the beginning of the Doors. This song was also the song the band had Robby Kreiger play for his audition into the band. The Doors attempted to record the song a year prior for their first album and did indeed lay down two takes. These versions just didn’t fit the rest of the songs so they scrapped it for the meantime. They returned to it a year later for the second album Strange Days. This time, they went for a different feel, straying away from the very 60s beach sound the first two versions had. Their new take on the song worked perfectly on Strange Days and became a hit. I’ve made some discoveries on Ray’s parts since my first version of this video. I’ve discovered that there’s actually 3 keyboards on this song. Ray plays a regular piano, an overdubbed tack piano, and an overdubbed Clavinet. I did not know Ray played two pianos previously, but I noticed: on the original album version of Moonlight Drive you can hear without a doubt that the main piano is a tack piano, on the newer mixes you can hear that the piano mix is a little duller. It is prominent that there is something else playing along with the tack piano and I put the dots together that it is just a normal piano. Both pianos play the exact same thing. Before, I did know there was a Clavient, so nothing’s changed there.
