Road Parables – This Week: From the Desert to the Covenant of Peace: Leadership, Zeal, and the Routine of the Tamid – Habiva Pedia: Pinchas. The Parable of Pinchas describes the change of generations: the generation of the desert dies, the younger generation is functioning towards entering the Land, and Moses seeks to appoint a leader who will be “a man with a spirit in him” – a spirit to the body of the community. Alongside the transition from Moses to Joshua, the Sages and the Kabbalists describe a deeper process: the transformation of Pinchas’ zeal into the Covenant of Peace, and the replacement of sacrifice, complaint, and revenge with a leadership of speech, responsibility, and peace.
