Patterns of Heredity Part 1 discusses terms in heredity, Mendel's First and Second Laws. There are several terms that students must know to understand heredity, namely parental, filial, gene, allele, phenotype, genotype, hybrid (monohybrid and dihybrid). The branch of biology that studies the inheritance of traits is called genetics. Genetics began to develop when Mendel conducted research using peas. Mendel's First Law is also called the law of segregation (the separation of identical genes). Mendel's First Law can be demonstrated through monohybrid crosses. Mendel's Second Law is also called the law of assortment (the independent grouping of alleles). Mendel's Second Law can be demonstrated through dihybrid crosses. Hopefully, this is helpful.
