Janis Joplin Sabotaged the Rolling Stones With a Candy Bar — Mick Jagger Never Found Out

Janis Joplin: The Untold Legacy explores the real moments behind one of rock history's most powerful voices. In 1969, during the Rolling Stones' American tour, Janis Joplin and her friend Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad snuck onto a luxury helicopter reserved for the Stones' next flight. Janis had a running grudge against the British Invasion bands, once telling Farner: British invasion, my ass. Those guys sing in American English because we are the only ones free. Those guys are born subject to the crown; those guys are born assholes. So in the brutal Florida heat, the two of them smeared a chocolate bar deep into the helicopter's plush cream leather seats — knowing exactly who was about to sit in them, wearing his signature white satin stage trousers: Mick Jagger. There's no record Jagger ever traced the chocolate back to Janis. As far as anyone knows, he still doesn't know. That same November, during the Rolling Stones' famous Madison Square Garden run (partly captured in Gimme Shelter), Janis and Jimi Hendrix hung out backstage together — while Keith Richards later recalled Janis, drunk, screaming up at Mick from the side of the stage. Farner shared the chocolate story decades later in a Rock History Music interview, revealing a mischievous, funny side of Janis rarely covered in the standard telling of her life.
