SAMBA, FAVELA, DOIS CARAS NUMA MOTO! O que os gringos pensam da gente? O anime MICHIKO E HATCHIN

This video is based on the controversy surrounding the release of MANGAKÁ NA FAVELA by Souhachi Hagimoto and Minoru Taruro. How do Japanese people (and foreigners in general) portray Brazil? In fact, why is this portrayal so important to us? To explain all this in depth, I will analyze a second work, the 2008 anime MICHIKO AND HATCHIN. The story follows Michiko Malandro, a criminal who escapes from prison, and Hana Morenos, nicknamed Hatchin, a girl who lives under the abuse of her adoptive parents. Together, on a scooter, they embark on a journey through the fictional country of Diamandra, inspired by Brazil, in search of Hiroshi Morenos, Hatchin's biological father and Michiko's ex-lover. MICHIKO AND HATCHIN is a work remembered (and sometimes forgotten) for bringing a fantastical approach to Brazil, although at times it manages to be quite faithful. In this video, I comment on the views of MANGAKÁ NA FAVELA and MICHIKO E HATCHIN on Brazil, I talk about Brazilian and Japanese culture, I explain the viralatismo of Brazil, cultural anthropophagy, agency in Japanese art and cultural appropriation.
