Set shortly after the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), the story follows Saichi Sugimoto, a former Japanese soldier known as "Sugimoto the Immortal," who searches for a hidden treasure of gold to help the widow of a former comrade. Alongside Asirpa, a young Ainu woman, he becomes embroiled in a plot that reveals both the oppression suffered by the Ainu people—an indigenous minority in northern Japan—and the militaristic expansion of the Japanese state in the early 20th century, which simultaneously integrated and repressed local cultures under the imperialist project. The series balances adventure, humor, and violence, while also critically portraying Japanese militarism and offering a rare and respectful representation of Ainu culture and resistance. In this video, I discuss the beginning of Golden Kamuy's story, discussing Japanese militarism, Ainu culture, bizarre legends, ugly bears, and delicious food.
