Triumph T140V Rear Brake Girling Master Cylinder Fitting & Tips | Scrambler Desert Sled Build | 28
Triumph T140V Rear Brake Girling Master Cylinder Fitting & Tips | Scrambler Desert Sled Build | 28 In this video, I take a closer look at fitting the rear master cylinder on my Triumph T140V Bonneville, which has been reimported from the United States. The bike has been completely stripped down and I’m now well into the rebuild stage of the project. #ad Here's what we used in this video (affiliate links). As anyone who has worked on these old Bonnevilles will know, the brakes are almost always seized. The brake fluid absorbs water over time, leading to corrosion, and after sitting for decades it’s rare to find a serviceable system. On other bikes I’ve managed to rebuild the original master cylinder using new seals, but on this one the internal corrosion was too far gone to save. While searching for a suitable replacement, I came across a Girling master cylinder that looked perfect for the job. It has the right period appearance, a stainless steel bore for improved longevity, and best of all it’s available at a very reasonable price. It was an easy decision to go with that option. Back in 1974–75, Triumph faced quite a challenge in introducing a rear disc brake to the Bonneville. The design they came up with works, but it’s not at all straightforward to assemble. The parts have to be fitted in a very particular order for everything to line up correctly, and even the workshop manual doesn’t provide much guidance. The parts book isn’t much help either, as one of the assemblies is actually shown the wrong way round. Despite having worked on a few of these before, I always seem to have to puzzle it out afresh each time. The return spring is usually the trickiest part, though on this occasion it went together without too much difficulty. At this stage of the build, I’m mainly dry-fitting the cycle parts to make sure everything fits properly before final assembly. Once I’m happy with the fit and function, I’ll go back and tighten everything to spec. I’ve already fitted a Girling floating brake disc to the rear wheel, and I’m considering using a Girling caliper as well. That will mean having a custom brake line made up, but I think it will be worth it for both performance and appearance. This video goes through the process of assembling and installing the rear master cylinder and associated fittings. It’s a bit of a mechanical jigsaw, involving engine plates, the footrest mount, and various spacers and bolts that all interact in a surprisingly intricate way. I check the correct clearances, deal with the spring mechanism, and make sure everything operates smoothly. It’s one of those tasks where a methodical approach and a bit of patience pay off. If you’re rebuilding a T140 or similar Triumph with a rear disc brake, this video should help make sense of how it all goes together. There are a few details that are easy to overlook, and hopefully watching the process will save you some trial and error. As always, I appreciate any feedback or suggestions—especially if you spot anything I could do differently next time. There’s more to come as the desert sled build progresses, including plumbing in the rear brake line and fitting the caliper, so do subscribe to follow along with the project.
