Schumann: Kreisleriana, Op. 16 8. Schnell und spielend Robert Schumann (1810–1856) The Kreisleriana, written 1838, reportedly in only four days, during Schumann's engagement-era separation from Clara Wieck, published later that year with the dedication 'To Mr Frederick Chopin', a gesture Chopin reportedly received without enthusiasm. The cycle is named for the fictional Kapellmeister Johannes Kreisler from E.T.A. Hoffmann (specifically from the Kreisleriana columns of Hoffmann's Fantasiestücke in Callots Manier, expanded later into the unfinished Lebens-Ansichten des Katers Murr), Schumann's lifelong avatar for the artist as ecstatic, self-divided, and alternately manic and depressed. Eight numbered pieces, alternating fast and slow without the strong ABA design of the Davidsbündlertänze: the cycle reads as a single emotional arc rather than a set of related character pieces. Schumann counted it among his own favorites of his piano works.
