The Bumpiest Road on Genie South Line: Western Sichuan’s "Car-Dismantling Yard" - 4K

Among them, a 10-kilometer stretch full of deep bomb craters and washboard surfaces is known as the “Car-breaking Yard of Western Sichuan”. The pass sits at 4,700–4,810 m above sea level, descending to Reti Valley at 3,900 m and climbing back to Zeba Village at 4,000 m. A proper 4WD off-road vehicle takes about 1 hour; regular SUVs are slower, and passenger cars are highly likely to bottom out. There is no cell signal or gas station along the way. The best travel periods are June–August and October; winter travel requires 4WD and snow chains. The road can be divided into two parts: the first 16 km from the pass to Reti Valley. The first half is paved mixed with gravel, featuring steep cliffside curves and frequent rockfalls. The second half is entirely unpaved, with dense bomb craters—dust storms in dry weather and muddy, slippery surfaces in rain that easily damage the chassis and cause flat tires. The final 4 km from Reti Valley to Zeba Village runs past the roughest section near Hongda Camp, then improves slightly to simple dirt roads. Along the way, you can enjoy stunning scenery including the Genie mountain range, Reti Wetland, and Hongda Meadow. From Zeba Village, you can also visit the “One Tree Viewpoint” for a close view of Genie Main Peak. It is strongly recommended to use a heavy-duty 4WD vehicle, preferably with AT tires, a full-size spare tire, tow rope, shovel, and other recovery gear. Fill up the tank in Litang or Batang and bring sufficient supplies. Since there is no mobile signal, download offline maps and tracks in advance. Travel in groups, avoid driving off-road onto grasslands, start early, and drive slowly on rough sections. Solo travel is not recommended in rain or snow.
