Kissaten, or traditional Japanese coffeehouses emerged in the early 20th century, serving as quiet havens for intellectuals, artists, and workers. These uniquely Japanese spaces blend Western-style coffee culture with a distinctly local aesthetic, where the dim lights and cigarette smoke cast in the air foster a slower, more contemplative social atmosphere. Today, kissaten are also cultural landmarks— nostalgic pockets frozen in time, giving a glimpse into the daily lives of the generations that kept Japan running in the Showa era . Coffee Lawn (@coffee_lawn) is a third generation Kissaten located just a few minutes walk from Yotsuya station, that has served an unchanged menu of beloved coffees and snacks for over 70 years. With coffee giants like Starbucks providing cheap, accessible coffee on the go, the idea of spending hours at a Kissaten reading or immersed in work has become a dying culture in Japan. However, Lawn continues to provide the same authentic experience as they had three generations ago, now for a diverse mix of customers from regulars who have been loyal patrons for decades to excited college students looking to unwind and talk with friends. 昭和のレトロな面影を残す「喫茶店（キッサテン）」は、20世紀初頭に誕生した日本独自のコーヒーハウス文化です。知識人や芸術家、サラリーマンが静かに集い、思索にふける場所。薄暗い照明にタバコの煙が揺らめき、時間の流れがゆったりと進む――そんな空間は、現代のカフェとは一線を画しています。今では珍しくなりつつあるこの空気感を、オープン当初から変えずに守り続けている場所があります。 四ツ谷駅から徒歩5分、新宿通りに佇む「Coffee Lawn（珈琲・ロン）」は、創業から70年以上、三代にわたり変わらぬ味と空間を提供している純喫茶です。茶室をインスピレーションとしてこだわり抜かれたインテリアは、ロン特有の落ち着いた空間を作り出しています。店内に一歩足を踏み入れれば、まるでタイムスリップしたかのように、昭和当時の日常の断片を体感できます。提供されるコーヒーや、レトロの代名詞であるクリームソーダやサンドウィッチは創業当初からほとんど変わっておらず、こだわりの一杯が、今日も丁寧に淹れられています。 スターバックスをはじめとするチェーン店が街中を席巻し、“コーヒーは持ち歩くもの”というライフスタイルが定着しつつある今、ロンで過ごす時間は、まさに贅沢そのもの。静かに読書をする常連客もいれば、大学帰りの学生たちがコーヒー片手に語り合う姿も。世代や立場を超えて、人と人とのつながりが生まれるこの場所には、今も変わらないぬくもりが息づいています。 Login.jp presents: The Shoten, a series where we curate performances by DJs in various local 商店 (Shōten), or stores, across Japan to archive their unique vibes, culture, and the real Japanese experience through music.
