Perched on a hilltop, it is one of the largest castle complexes in Germany and holds a rich history stretching back nearly a thousand years. First mentioned in 1056, the fortress began taking its current form under the Staufer dynasty in the early 13th century. A period of cultural flourishing followed in the 16th century, when the Saxon electors frequently used the castle as a residence. From the 19th century onward, the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha transformed the fortress into a repository of world-renowned art collections. The oldest parts of the structure date back to the 12th century. Over time, the castle passed through the hands of the Dukes of Andechs-Merania, the Counts of Henneberg, and in 1353 was inherited by Margrave Frederick the Strict of Meissen, entering the lineage of the House of Wettin. In this video, discover the fascinating history and evolution of Coburg Castle—one of Germany’s most iconic and culturally significant fortresses. 🔔 Subscribe for more stories from Europe’s rich medieval past!
