Episode # 5431 THE MINK COAT Original airdate: 3-27-55 This is the story of a golf instructor’s wife, Peggy O’Hara played by Loretta Young, who receives a mink coat from one of her husband’s grateful pupils. Everything is fine, until the gift threatens the couple’s modest way of life. Peggy immediately goes on a spending spree buying clothes to go with the coat, a new car, and redecorating her house. Her husband Dan, played by Jock Mahoney, is desperate until Peggy realizes that she is living in a dream world and, finally, learns to use the mink coat for a more sensible purpose. Jock Mahoney was was a popular co-star in this series who was featured in several episodes in its early years. Mahoney is best remembered for starring in his own two western television series The Range Rider and Yancy Derringer, and playing Tarzan in two feature films. He was a stepfather of the actress Sally Field, scientist Richard Field, Dr. Carl Botefuhr, artist Angela Russell and author and artist Andrea von Botefuhr. He died of a stroke two days after being involved in an automobile accident in Bremerton, Washington in 1989 at the age of 70. His ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. The character of Bill Garner is played by another favorite character actor of the series, Casey Adams. Sometimes credited as Max Showalter, Adams was a film, television, and stage actor, as well as a composer, pianist, and singer who appeared on more than 1,000 television programs. In 1984, he retired from acting and moved to an 18th-century farmhouse in Chester, Connecticut and became involved in local musical theatre, including the Ivoryton Playhouse, and went on to produce, direct, write, and narrate the Christmas musical Touch of a Child. He also spent much of his free time painting oil miniatures. On July 30, 2000, Adams died of cancer in Middletown, Connecticut. He was 83 years old.
