Fast wäre hier Olympische Geschichte geschrieben worden - Die Regatta Strecke von 1954
Brieskow-Finkenheerd to Küstrin-Kiez (40 km) - Day 3 After another cold night in the old finish line tower, we were greeted by a very cold but sunny morning. The river's appearance changed considerably from Frankfurt (Oder) onwards. The immense shipping traffic that existed at that time was now limited solely to the massive Polish groyne construction. Unfortunately, the river is being significantly altered here again. This surprises me, as there was virtually no shipping traffic on the entire Oder. In Lebus, we stopped for lunch at the anglers' club. Well-rested, we continued on to the next "sight" on the Polish side. Unfortunately, the old observation tower was no longer safe to climb. The next sight, however, was a structure steeped in history. The Küstrin Fortress was built in the second half of the 16th century to protect the capital city of Küstrin, then part of the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Küstrin. The great importance of the fortress is underscored by the fact that it wasn't until 1920 that the victorious Allied powers of World War I dissolved it with the Treaty of Versailles. Shortly thereafter, the demolition of the eastern city walls began. At the end of World War II, Küstrin was once again declared a fortress in 1945, and the city was almost completely destroyed by the fighting by the end of March 1945. Since the end of the war, the portion of the fortifications on the right bank of the Oder River lies in the Polish town of Kostrzyn nad Odrą, while the remaining outworks are located in the German municipality of Küstriner Vorland. The already damaged fortifications in Poland have been further damaged by blasting and demolition work for building materials. Since the 1990s, restoration work has been underway on the fortifications in the old town and Fort Gorgast, which survived the war, while the other outworks have fallen into disrepair due to vacancy. We found our accommodation on the opposite bank of the Oder River at the local fisherman's place.
