On August 2, 1916, the foundation of the factory was laid in the Truffle Grove in southern Moscow. No one present knew it was the beginning of a century-long story. The Revolution upended everything, the Ryabushinskys emigrated, but the foundation remained. The first Soviet truck, the AMO-F-15, drove across Red Square in 1924. The ZIS-5 became the workhorse of the pre-war USSR. The ZIL-130 produced three and a half million units. The ZIL-111, a limousine for top executives, produced a hundred units without a single one being sold. The "Yunost" bus won twelve awards in Nice, and Henry Ford offered to buy the license. He was refused. The last truck rolled off the assembly line in the fall of 2016—exactly one hundred years after the groundbreaking. Residential areas now occupy the site of the factory.
