100-Year-Old Fly Still Catches Fish! | Carey Special Fly Pattern

This is a variation of the 100-year-old Carey Special. The Carey Special is a classic fly pattern created by Colonel Carey of British Columbia in the 1930s, it gained widespread recognition and popularity through its inclusion in Roderick Haig-Brown's influential book, "The Western Angler," published in 1939. This fly pattern is highly versatile and effective for targeting various species of trout and other game fish. It typically features an oversized hackle design, with a body made of chenille or wool, often in earthy or natural colors like olive, brown, or black. Its oversized hackle feather collar adds lifelike movement and helps to imitate the appearance of aquatic insects or small baitfish. This is one modern variation I like to use as a wet fly, often swinging it behind my streamer in the spring and fall. Here I’ve changed it a bit using wire to add a hot spot, a peacock body, and shortening the hackle a bit.
