Introduction to the Formation Evaluation of Carbonate Rocks, Part 1: PGE358 Spring 2020
PGE358, Spring 2020: Principles of Formation Evaluation. Instructor: Carlos Torres-Verdin, PhD, Professor, Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin. This video-recorded lecture is an introduction to the formation evaluation of carbonate rocks. Special emphasis is placed on the measurement and/or quantification of (a) storage and flow properties, and (b) elastic and mechanical properties. Part 1 (this part) focuses on (a) the genesis and diagenesis of carbonate rocks and their controls on storage and flow properties, and (b) formation evaluation of carbonate rocks with conventional well logs. Part 2 examines the distribution of pore and throat sizes of carbonate rocks and their impact on storage and fluid-transport properties. Part 3 describes the use of advanced ("boutique") well logs (e.g., magnetic resonance, borehole images, spectroscopy, and formation testing) for the in-situ evaluation of petrophysical and mechanical properties of complex carbonate rocks.
