March Madness… Or Was It? | Steelhead Fishing the Erie Tribs

After a brutal winter locked up the Erie tributaries, I finally got back out in mid-March for what I hoped would be a strong spring steelhead run. With poor returns in the fall, I was counting on this trip to make up for lost time. The day started exactly how I wanted it to—early action, a few solid dropbacks, and all the signs pointing toward a potential banner day. But as the hours went on, things took a turn. I kept running into waves of stocked steelhead smolts, making it tougher and tougher to find quality fish. This is the reality of spring steelhead fishing on the Great Lakes tributaries—conditions can look perfect, but the fishing doesn’t always follow the script. No one else I talked to reported anything different. Eventually, I made the call to wrap it up, knowing my odds were slim. If this ends up being my last steelhead fishing trip of 2026, it was still a season to remember—despite the challenges. If you enjoy fly fishing steelhead, euro nymphing, and honest looks at tough days on the water, this one’s for you.
