Exploring a Small River with BIG Wild Brown Trout

One of my goals for 2026 is to explore new water and track down trophy wild brown trout. This trip brought me to a small Pennsylvania river rumored to hold some seriously big fish. I started the morning throwing streamers and almost immediately connected with a nearly 20-inch wild brown trout. It was the kind of start every fly angler hopes for. But after that hot bite, the action slowed way down. Over the next few hours, I covered a ton of water, moved only a couple more fish, and landed one smaller trout. By the afternoon, I decided to switch things up and break out the euro nymphing setup to see what else lived in this river. That adjustment completely changed the day. I started finding wild brown trout of all size classes and connected with a few more quality fish before calling it quits. This prospecting mission turned into a successful day of Pennsylvania fly fishing, and I’m already looking forward to getting back under better conditions to see what this river is really capable of.
