My Chicken Food Forest–Year Three (It's Finally Working)

Three years ago this was compacted dirt and weeds. I had a stubborn dream to stop relying on the feed store and grow food for my chickens right here on our half acre.Year one I planted annuals — crimson clover, wheat, oats. They ate everything in weeks.Year two I rebuilt it with perennials and locked them out. Hoped for the best.Year three — I opened the gate. And I couldn't believe what was in there.The lambs quarter came back on its own — carpeting the entire tunnel without me planting a single seed. The comfrey rooted and is growing up through the fencing. The Jerusalem artichokes established themselves. Black raspberries growing above. Mulberries dropping later this spring. Willows growing along the outside.This is what a chicken food forest looks like when the perennials finally take hold. Less work every year. More food every season.
