If you ask a foreigner which Brazilian cities they'd like to visit, the answer will probably include Rio de Janeiro. This is the main destination for tourists from other countries, especially since Rio is known worldwide for its beauty, which earned it the nickname "The Marvelous City." But it wasn't always this way. In the early 20th century, an outsider had to have a very adventurous spirit to set foot in the city. This was because Rio was considered ugly and unhealthy, to the point that many people considered it unworthy of being the Brazilian capital. Until a mayor emerged with an idea and a pickaxe in his hand. Pereira Passos demolished almost all of old Rio de Janeiro to build a new city. Obviously, this didn't happen peacefully; he faced many protests and even an attempted coup d'état.
