Racing cars must be homologated to be able to race and be safe for the drivers. In rallying, there are no speed limits, and unlike Formula 1, the races don't take place on closed circuits with perfect safety measures (run-off areas, barriers, etc.). Rallying uses conventional roads to reach speeds not permitted under normal driving conditions. Therefore, we must take extreme precautions and use the highest quality safety equipment. The use of a full roll cage, battery disconnect switch, racing bucket seats, and fire extinguishers is mandatory. Preparing a race car is no easy task, and you must comply with all FIA homologations and protocols. Furthermore, when preparing a rally car, you must ensure it is street legal and passes the racing MOT/vehicle inspection. The RFEDA, the Royal Spanish Automobile Federation, helps manage the homologation of race cars and advises drivers on building their own cars. To examine the safety features of competition cars, we used my two rally cars: a Subaru Impreza WRX STI gravel car and a Suzuki Swift from the Swift Cup of the Spanish Rally Championship. These cars have competed in the World Rally Championship (WRC) and have FIA homologation papers that allow them to participate in all World Rally Championship events. We checked how safe the race cars are, with their roll cages and all the mandatory equipment for competition. We reviewed the safety equipment that a car and driver must have to compete. Roll cages can be homologated and installed on street cars as long as they comply with the vehicle inspection regulations. How do you install a roll cage? In this video, we explain how to prepare a car for rally and also recommend the necessary safety measures for track days to prevent serious car accidents.
