The Bells of Notre Dame (ノートルダムの鐘) - Yamaha Electone ELS03XR

“The Bells of Notre Dame" (ノートルダムの鐘 ) is a song from the 1996 Walt Disney film The Hunchback of Notre Dame (musical-comedy film), composed by Alan Menken. The film loosely based on the 1831 dark novel by Victor Hugo. A question was posted at the beginning and ending of The Hunchback of Notre Dame that totally encapsulates the story of this animation; “Who is the monster and who is the man?” The animation starts with a Parisian Justice Minister in Paris, Judge Claude Frollo chased down a young mother, killed her at the steps of the cathedral and was about to throw her deformed baby (Quasimodo) down the well, was stopped by The Archdeacon of the cathedral. Fearing on punishments from God, Frollo was stuck with raising the baby. Instead of receiving affection and love, the baby was raised in insolation and made to believe that he is a monster who will never be accepted by the people and can never be loved. Halfway through the story, Quasimodo met Esmeralda and they became friends. However, Frollo was lusting after Esmeralda and obsessed in eradicate an entire ethnic group known as Roma. Quasimodo went against Frollo for the 1st time in his life trying to save Esmeralda. He thought by bringing her into the cathedral where is it a legal sanctuary under the 15th-century law (the Church had the right to grant asylum to anyone fleeing persecution or the crown's justice). Once inside, authorities were forbidden by law to arrest Esmeralda without the Church's permission. However, Frollo completely obsessed with Esmeralda and ignoring his sacred vows, breached her safe haven by trying to assault her inside the cathedral. That’s where my music video will end here on the story. If you’re pique by this video, do watch the animation for its ending and listen to its wonderful soundtrack. Although predictable storyline as with all Disney films, it is worth a watch just to enjoy the music and gothic art of the world famous Notre Dame cathedral. For the Electone cover, this is my 1st song played on the ELS03XR. The 03 series were launched in Malaysia on 21st June 2026. ELS03XR is a beautiful instrument with massive voicing increased and improvements from the 02 series. I love the solid feel of its built and the electone height now is much more suited to my height. I thought the orchestral voicing in ELS02C was amazing… I never would have thought Yamaha would break its own record and came out with an improved version with the 03 series. Anyway I hope you’ll enjoy the song. This song is quite tricky to play because it has tempo change and time signature change at few sections and the percussions can be tricky to follow. I really enjoyed playing this song for you on this new 03 Electone. The animation images were running through my mind while I was practicing it. I thought I’ll share with you those images, as always with my videos, to make the cover songs much more memorable :). Btw this iconic song is the intro song into the film.
