Title: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria: diversity, clinical relevance, and diagnostic approaches Speaker: Dr. Luke B. Harrison, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, McGill University. Medical Microbiologist, Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine, McGill University. Junior Scientist, The Research Institute of the MUHC Educational objectives At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: • Describe the basic characteristics, diversity, and clinical relevance of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) • Describe the diversity of clinical presentations of pulmonary and extrapulmonary non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease • Describe current culture-based diagnostic modalities for NTM, their inherent limitations and discuss the challenges in interpreting the clinical relevance of NTM recovered in culture from different specimens • Describe the basic principle of metagenomic sequencing, its promise and limitations, and application to the diagnosis of NTM disease Biosketch of Dr. Luke B. Harrison: Dr. Harrison completed a NSERC-funded PhD in Evolutionary Biology from McGill University before returning to McGill for medical school. He then completed residency training in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology at the McGill University Health Centre during which he contributed to papers on mpox and mycobacterial genetics. Subsequent to residency training, Dr. Harrison did a FRQ-supported post-doctoral research fellowship in comparative genomics and metagenomics at Armand-Frappier Santé Biotechnologie Research Centre, Laval in the Clinician Investigator Program. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/31Mar2026 If you watch the video prior to Nov. 30, 2026 deadline we will submit claim for CME credits.
