CVT transmissions are very good at optimizing fuel consumption. They have many advantages, such as always having the "ideal gear" that allows you to get the best performance from the engine. However, this type of automatic transmission also has some weaknesses. I would say that, to begin with, being a different type of technology, completely different from a torque converter or dual-clutch transmission, its driving feel is very different. The first thing I noticed is that it's somewhat slow off the mark, and then, when the RPMs increase, it stays in the upper part of the tachometer, in this case between 5,000 and 6,000 RPM, but the speed keeps increasing. It's not like other types of transmissions where the RPMs drop between shifts; here, they don't. In CVT transmissions, they remain stable. As I said before, it's a different feeling, but when you release the accelerator, the RPMs drop drastically. What advantages do I see in this transmission? I think it's good for people looking for a smooth ride, who aren't interested in pushing their vehicle's performance to the limit. For city driving and highway trips, they're excellent. They save a lot of fuel. But, for those looking for a better connection with the car, I definitely wouldn't recommend it. Even though more modern cars have paddle shifters that allow you to operate the transmission "manually," I feel that CVTs don't provide much driving feedback, especially during "sporty" driving. Whether they're good or bad depends on how you use the car and your driving habits. Personally, I obviously prefer a manual transmission, but when it comes to automatic transmissions, I prefer a dual-clutch, like the DSG, S-Tronic, or PDK. I love how quickly they shift gears and how well they respond to the driver's inputs.
