El Refugio más aislado de España: Cabrones 🐐 | Ascensión a Torrecerredo 1 | LowCosTravellers

Ascent to the Cabrones Refuge via Canal de Amuesa | Ascent to Torrecerredo 1 | LowCosTravellers We're swapping bikes for boots and hitting the mountains! This is an adventure we've been wanting to do for a while, having already postponed it a few times due to various circumstances. We're heading to the highest peak in the Picos de Europa, Torrecerredo, at 2,650 meters, also the highest peak in Asturias and León. But to reach this peak, we'll first go to the Cabrones Refuge, the highest of the Picos de Europa at over 2,000 meters, and one of the most isolated in the Iberian Peninsula. We'll spend the night there before tackling the Torrecerredo ascent the next day. The climb to the refuge will already cover nearly 2,000 meters of elevation gain, in addition to carrying our bivouac gear. So we started our route from a parking lot near Poncebos, where the Cares route would also start, but we detoured across the river to head toward the village of Bulnes, which has no road access, and can only be reached via this path and a funicular. From Bulnes, we began the climb to the Cabrones refuge via the Canal de Amuesa, a sun-drenched scree that climbs relentlessly. This canal surprised us in a positive way, as the path is very firm throughout the entire ascent, with no areas of loose stones or large steep indentations, just a steep gradient that requires patience, as it seems the end of the climb will never come. Finally, we left the canal to find ourselves at the Brañas de Amuesa. And here we finally rested a bit, enjoying the views. We continued the climb, now entering a more exposed limestone area, with some easy climbs and passages over some flakes, which were also not difficult. And finally, we reached the Cabrones refuge (Refugio J. Lueje), where we could already see the highest peaks of the Picos de Europa as a backdrop. After dropping off our things and having a few beers with our friends from Pasu a Pasu (we recommend their blog if you like the mountains), we enjoyed the sunset over the sea of clouds from the Canal del Agua pass, to conclude the day.
