Iceland's Most Devastating History | Iceland 09 | LowCosTravellers We continue discovering Iceland's landscapes and the stories they tell of their origins, and sometimes of the tragedies that shaped them, which are not few in this part of the world: volcanoes, glaciers, wild rivers, and merciless temperatures, among others. We woke up still near Vík, specifically at the foot of the black sand beach of Víkurfjara, from where we could once again contemplate the Reynisdrangar spires out to sea. This time, the experience was much more intimate than the previous day's visit to Reynisfjara beach, which was packed with people. Here, we were practically alone, and we were also able to park for free. Both of these things made enjoying the beach, the views of the sea, and the spires much more enjoyable, and the truth is, waking up in a place like this is breathtaking. After enjoying the beach, we left Vik behind and continued east along the Ring Road (N1). We not only left Vik behind, but also the Myrdalsjökull glacier, venturing into the lava fields between it and Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe by volume. These lava fields are the origin of one of the most devastating events in Iceland's history: the Laki tragedy, a volcanic eruption in 1783. This eruption, which occurred in a fissure between the two glaciers, Myrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull, generated a toxic cloud that killed 9,000 Icelanders and more than 50% of the island's livestock. The resulting cloud blocked out the sun for months, causing crop failures and subsequent famine, even leading to the consideration of evacuating the entire island. Truly a horrific event. As far as we're concerned, the 14 cubic kilometers of lava ejected in this event have formed this vast volcanic plain between the two glaciers, stretching all the way to the coast. These are relatively recent volcanic formations, so they're still in the early stages of vegetation cover. What we find as we travel along this section of Route 1 are expanses of plains formed by small, cushion-like mounds of moss and lichens that settle on the uneven surface of the lava, creating a landscape that literally seems otherworldly. After crossing the Laki lava fields, and getting closer to the Vatnajökull glacier, we begin to pass through areas with more varied terrain, where the rivers, as they flow over the landscape, form numerous waterfalls of different types and shapes. We stop right by the roadside at a couple of these. The first is Hamrafoss waterfall, which plunges vertically from a cliff several dozen meters high. Unfortunately, we can only see it from the parking lot since it's on private land and access is prohibited, but it's still spectacular. The second waterfall we stop at is also right by the road, but it couldn't be more different from the first. This is Fossálar waterfall, which forms a wide, low cascade in a much flatter area, also distributed in several stepped drops.
